Sunlight burns
through transparent panes
peeling back lids
little brittle pages
from an old book
laid carefully upon the flame
Jumping from beds
as if they smoldered
about to ignite
racing to windows
closing in the world
starving the light
snuffing it out behind the partition
Shadows of remnants
backlit — crisply defiant
stiff–necked trees
encircle like Romans
who competed to scourge Christ
obfuscating, but not obscuring
providing contrast to the radiance
